Wacky Law Fact - Flan Edition

Ford challenged me to find a wacky law fact about flan, so here it is.

A restaurant owner sued a newspaper columnist after the reporter gave the restaurant a particularly nasty review. The restaurant owner claimed that the review amounted to defamation and sued for damages.

The case went all the way up to the Supreme Court of Louisiana where the court held that the review was a "fair comment" and thus not liable for defamation.

Among other things, the column criticized the restaurants custard dessert: "the caramel custard tastes like a fallen butterscotch flan which is not that bad but hardly like caramel custard." - Mashburn v. Collin, 355 So. 2d 879

There you have it, you cannot be liable for defamation for giving a bad review to a restaurant's flan .... or custard.

I saw Children of Men yesterday. I must say it was a great movie. You should definitely go see it. I even hear that they developed some new camera technique that allowed them to film this extended car scene. Ford, I thought you might find this interesting.

You can read about the new camera work here: Doggicam and Picture of a scene

I also saw "Epic Movie" which was fun but not all that funny. Plus there were these two girls behind me talking during the entire movie. It was kinda funny because it wasn't like they were talking about the movie, it's like they were talking TO the movie.

Like they were talking to the characters:

"Guurl, how's there going to be a talking beaver?"
"Oh my god, no she didn't!"
"How can they be a family when there's a white girl and an Indian guy?"
"Damn, that bitch is stupid"

At one point, a guy in the row in front of me yells "Will you please be quiet or else I'll have to call the management!" To which the girls replied "Oh no he didn't" and "whatever". Sadly, he did not call the management.

That reminds me of the time Ford and I went to see Spiderman 2 - and there was a group of kids up front yelling at the screen. Things like, "WHAT?!" at really quiet moments. People threatened them and then the kids yelled back that the "crypts" were going to kill them. Security came but it was just a kid with a flashlight and he was too scared to yell at the gang so eventually we left and Thuba demanded our money back from the theater. They obliged seeing as how they couldn't even handle their own security. Good times!

Well done Ben..... Well done.

Your new challenge (If you choose to accept it?) is to find a wacky law about kittens, and it better be damn cute!!!!
