Bittersweet

It's so sad that that nice Old Man and his granddaughter didn't win the election. And they worked so hard trying to spread lies and hatred. Oh well, maybe next time.

YAYAYAYAYAYYAY! How fucking exciting was that? When they called Ohio it was over! And then to see all the other states. And it looks like he may even take North Carolina. What a world we live in!

It's very exciting to be part of this historic moment. Who wants to go to the inaguaration with me?

But at the same time it's also sad. It's like we took one giant leap forward by electing the first black president, but then we took several big steps back for gay rights. Florida and Arizona passed gay marriage bans. And in Arkansas they banned unmarried couples from adopting or being foster parents. But organizers of the ban made it clear that they were targetting gay couples/individuals. How fucked up is that?

Perhaps worst of all, Prop 8 in California passed. WTF California? They filed a lawsuit to challenge the process. Apparently there is precedent where the Supreme Court has overturned a voter initiative. So it's not beyond the realm of possibility that they would do it again. I mean how can it be constitutional for a simple majority of voters to strip civil rights/liberties from one segment of the population, especially when they are targetted for being gay?

Let's just hope having Obama in the White House can make up for it. Let's say goodbye to Don't Ask Don't Tell. Let's say hello to the Matthew Shepherd Hate Crimes Act and an Employment Nondiscrimination Act that includes LGBT's. Let's also say hello to more progressive Supreme Court justices who might overturn all the gay marriage bans a la Loving v. Virginia.
